2023 Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds are accredited group learning activities as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Which patients with rib fractures need advanced imaging?

Bio: Michael is an Emergency Physician working with Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health and does Trauma Team Leader shifts at Lions Gate. He completed his training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Toronto with a subspecialty focus in Pre-Hospital Medicine and Trauma.

Bio: Dr. Bhachu did his undergraduate at UBC in Mathematics, then went on to the University of Leeds in the UK for a Masters in Medical Engineering and Biomechanics. From there Sandeep was accepted into Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Upon graduating, he returned to Canada and completed his residency in Family Medicine at Queen’s University. Dr. Bhachu was in a PGY3 surgical skills program, and was able to transfer into Orthopaedics at Queen’s University.

Following graduation, Sandeep went on to complete two fellowships with the last being hip and knee reconstruction surgery. He has worked at Ridge Meadows Hospital since 2018, and has primarily been performing hip and knee replacements.

Bio: Torrance grew up in a small town in Southern Alberta, and moved to Victoria, BC to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He then moved across the country to Hamilton, and completed his medical school and Internal Medicine residency at McMaster University. Unable to resist the call of the West Coast, he returned to UBC to complete his ID fellowship. When he isn’t working he enjoys rock climbing, hiking, and other ways to stay active outside.

Learning Objectives:

Dr. Deepu George is a local Internist and Gastroenterologist. He trained in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University of Cape Town, in South Africa. His credentials include – MBChB, FCP (Internal Medicine, UCT), Certification Gastroenterology (UCT),  FRCPC (Internal Medicine, Canada), FRCPC (Gastroenterology, Canada).

Bio:

  1. Identify patients with chronic liver disease.
  2. Diagnostic tools, appropriate investigations.
  3. Gastroenterology/Hepatology referral.
  4. Management of Liver Cirrhosis: outpatient vs inpatient.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Mechanism of action of local anesthetics
  2. Recognize the risk factors, signs and symptoms of LAST
  3. Management and prevention of LAST

Bio: Dr. Arthur Fung is an Anesthesiologist at Ridge Meadows Hospital. He completed his medical education as well as training in Anesthesiology in Hong Kong. He moved to British Columbia in 2021 and then obtained RCPSC certification.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Overview of the Serious Illness Conversation Guide and how to incorporate it into goals of care discussions with palliative patients
  2. Learn about some key tips about opioid prescribing in hospital and the community for palliative patients
  3. Introduce a few resources that primary care providers can use to navigate palliative care resources in Fraser Health

Bio: Dr. Chew was born and raised in BC, having completed Medical School at UBC and Family Medicine Residency in the Chilliwack site. She became passionate about Palliative Medicine part-way through her Family Medicine Residency after seeing how open and honest conversations about the future and excellent symptom control could make a tremendous difference in the quality of life of patients with life-limiting illnesses. Leanne went on to do her year of added competency in Palliative Medicine at UBC and was fortunate enough to begin her career in Maple Ridge with the Palliative Consult team and McKenney Creek Hospice. Dr. Chew also routinely covers the tertiary Palliative Complex Care Unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital which addresses complex symptom management needs of palliative patients. When Leanne is not working she enjoys spending time with her husband Roy, and chasing or cuddling their 3 year old daughter Celeste.

Bio: Surendra Patel did his undergraduate training at University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England and graduated in 1972. He was a demonstrator in anatomy at University of Newcastle and was in hospital practice in England till 1976. He finished his orthopedic residency training at University of Manitoba in 1981. Dr. Patel subsequently did a hand surgery fellowship at the University of Philadelphia and in Indianapolis. He was then affiliated with the University of Manitoba at the Health Sciences centre and involved with teaching residents and shared hand call with plastic surgery colleagues.

He moved to Maple Ridge to join his good friend Dr. Davinder Bhachu and has been in practice here since 1988. His main interest has been hand and wrist surgery, and he has been running the hand clinic since then. He is a member of the American and Canadian Society for surgery of the hand. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, photography, and traveling.

  3. Assess 2-yr Patient outcomes from Initial MitraClip Experience.

Bio: Dr. Khan has been an Interventional Cardiologist at RCH since 2014. He is the Head of the Percutaneous Mitral Valve Program. He studied Medicine at McGill University, and specialized in Internal Medicine at Western University. Dr. Khan did his Interventional Fellowship at the Montreal Heart Institute.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of irAE presentations
  2. Learn about management principles for irAEs
  3. Know where to find help through guideline recommendations for irAE management strategies

Bio: Dr. Aleksi Suo has been a medical oncologist with BC Cancer for the past 5 years, he previously worked in Abbotsford and is now in Surrey. He completed his undergraduate in Microbiology & Immunology at UBC, and then attended medical school in Australia.

He returned to Canada for Internal Medicine training at the University of Saskatchewan and Medical Oncology training in Calgary. He treats skin/melanoma, genitourinary cancers and sarcoma, and is actively involved in research and clinical trials with a particular interest in immunotherapies.
