1. Please share your most interesting case with a patient?
“I am a gynecologist but one of my interests is fertility and one time I had this really interesting case when I was working abroad. I had a taxi driver who found out I had an interest in fertility and the second time he picked me up to drive me somewhere he proceeded to tell me his fertility problems. His wife had been pregnant but lost the pregnancy and they kept trying to get pregnant. In the back-seat pockets of the taxi he had two sperm analyses ready to go and ready to review. I ended up doing this bizarre consult in the back of a taxi. Needless to say, I never called that taxi company again.”
2. What is the best advice you were given during your time in medical school that has had a lasting impact on your practice?
“When I was trying to decide between Family Medicine or Obstetrics and Gynecology, there was a resident is obstetrics who said “you know the time is going to go by anyways, you might as well take the time to do what you love”. At the time I was worried about how long it would take because I wanted to start my career. In the end I really took that advice to heart and decided to take the longer training program. I have taken some detours in my career, but I have realized that its true, the time goes by anyways, you might as well spend it doing something you really love.”
3. What are you currently working on that is helping to impact our local medical community and/or local patients?
“As a group of obstetrical providers, we are working on optimizing maternity care for Maple Ridge. Some women choose to go to different hospitals, and they end up driving further distances to get the care they need. We want people to feel comfortable in their own community and make them aware we have really good services here that they can access.”
4. What is some advice or wisdom you would like to share with your medical staff peers, or any new physicians joining our community?
“Some advice I would give is if you have an office it is worth taking some time to set it up and making sure it works well with how you work. A lot of things are inherited from other people and how they like doings things, but you’re really going to work your best and enjoy your work the most if you set it up exactly to your preferences.”
