2025 Grand Rounds

Learning Objectives: 

  1. At the end of this session, participants will be able to identify a presentation of angioedema
  2. At the end of this session, participants will be able to differentiate the different causes of angioedema
  3. Participants will be able to diagnose and manage angioedema based on the different causes.

Bio: Dr Manstein Kan is an allergist and immunologist working in Langley and Burnaby. He is a Clinical Instructor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. His areas of interest and research include angioedema, chronic urticaria and food allergy. Dr. Kan is the Provincial Immunology Chair for Expensive Drugs for Rare Diseases.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. To explore the treatment options available for obesity management in the new age of treatment.
  2. To discuss the barriers that exist for appropriately managing obesity in current day practice.
  3. Practical tips to support patients.
  4. Discussing weight bias.

Bio: Dr. Ali Zentner received her undergraduate medical degree from McMaster University and completed her Internal Medicine Residency with an extra year of Cardiology training at the University of Calgary. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She is a clinical associate at University of British Columbia, Department of Internal Medicine. She has been in practice for over 20 years as a specialist in Obesity and Metabolic Medicine. Dr. Zentner is the founder and medical director of Revolution Medical Clinic and serves as its Medical Director. The clinic has been recognised as a centre of excellence by the European Association for the Study of Obesity. It is one of the largest multidisciplinary clinics in Canada run exclusively through the socialised health care system. Her current outreach projects focus on Truth and Reconciliation within Indigenous Communities where she is partnering with several First Nations’ Communities in British Columbia establishing metabolic clinics that focus on trauma informed care. Dr. Zentner is the founder and director of the Canadian Obesity Peer Support Program- an online and in person peer support educational platform for clinicians wanting to learn about obesity. (www.canadaobesitypeersupport.com) The program has trained over 600 clinicians in a peer support setting. Ali is also the founder and a board chair of NO FAT SHAME (www.notfatshame.com) a non profit organization whose mission it is to end weight bias in medicine and everywhere.

Presenter: Dr. Akshay Lobo

Topic: Hip and Knee Arthritis – Everything you need to know

Bio: Dr. Akshay Lobo has been working at Ridge Meadows Hospital for nearly 1 year now.  Originally from Toronto, he did his medical training and orthopaedics residency at UBC.  He then completed a fellowship in Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction, with subspecialization in Prosthetic Joint Infections. He now has a general orthopaedic practice, tailored to hip and knee replacements, and complex arthroplasty.

Presenter: Dr. Badrinath Narayan, Dr Naveen Mohanraj, and Dr. Murthy Korada

Topic: Hot Topics in Pediatrics

Bio:

Dr. Naveen Mohanraj, MRCPCH (UK), FRCPC (Canada)

Dr. Naveen Mohanraj is a pediatric consultant at Ridge Meadows Hospital in Maple Ridge. With extensive training in pediatrics from England, he holds a fellowship in Neonatology from Oxford University Hospitals. His clinical interests include acute and behavioral pediatrics, with a special focus on ADHD and Autism. Dr. Mohanraj is an active member of the BC Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN) and is currently leading a pioneering project in collaboration with BCAAN to enhance Autism assessments in the Maple Ridge area.

Dr. Murthy Korada

Dr Korada has been working as a paediatrician and a pediatric endocrinologist in Maple Ridge since 2010.  He also runs a weekly Pediatric Diabetes Clinic at Surrey Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Korada obtained his undergraduate degree in India. He completed his post-graduate training in Paediatrics and Pediatric endocrinology in the U.K. At Ridge Meadows Hospital, Maple Ridge, he’s part of the on-call team for acute paediatrics. Dr. Korada is a member of the medical staff association at Ridge Meadows Hospital and the specialist lead for the Ridge Meadows division of family practice.

Presenter: Dr. Evelyn Constantin MD CM MSc(Epi) FRCPC

Topic: Limited resources? Perspectives from the CMPA to limit your medico-legal risk and optimize patient safety

Bio: Dr. Constantin completed her medical degree at McGill University in Montreal. After her pediatrics residency at the University of Ottawa and McGill University, Dr. Constantin completed a clinical and research fellowship in Pediatric Sleep Medicine and a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology at McGill University. Amongst several roles, Dr. Constantin is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at McGill University, an epidemiologist and Associate Member of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, an Associate Member of the Institute of Health Sciences Education at McGill University, and a Senior Clinician Scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre.

Dr Constantin has been a leader in and involved with curriculum design and faculty development throughout the last 2 decades and was awarded the McGill Faculty Honour List for Education Excellence for her education innovations

Presenter: Dr. Jaskiran Brar

Topic: Approach to Stroke

Bio: Dr. Brar is a stroke neurologist based out of Royal Columbian Hospital and Surrey Memorial Hospital. They are the current Fraser Health stroke Lead.

Topic: Counselling the Concerned – A look at informed consent and some information about risks in anesthesia

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the definition, components and importance of informed consent
  2. Identify some common risks of anesthesia and what patients may find challenging to understand or accept
  3. Explain the possible effects of anesthesia on the developing brain, with knowledge from landmark trials on this topic
  4. Counsel and reassure patients on some of the risks of anesthesia

Presenter: Dr. Rebecca Brewer

Topic: Infection Mimics and Antibiotic Misconceptions

Bio: Dr. Rebecca Brewer is an experienced Emergency Medicine physician with over a decade of clinical practice across Nova Scotia and British Columbia. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Acadia University and her Doctor of Medicine from Dalhousie University, where she received the J.W. Merritt Award for top performance in surgery. After completing her CCFP and Emergency Medicine residency training at Dalhousie, she served as an Emergency Department staff physician and Associate Professor at Dalhousie Medical School, where she also developed simulation programs and provided trauma education for Canadian Armed Forces Search and Rescue technicians. Since 2021, Dr. Brewer has been practicing Emergency Medicine in Maple Ridge, BC.

Presenter: Dr. Anibal Bohorquez

Topic: A Physiatrist’s Approach To Weakness

Bio: Dr. Anibal Bohorquez is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the UBC Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He received his BSc.in Biochemistry from the University of California and his MD from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from UBC.

Dr. Bohorquez is an attending physician at GF Strong Rehab Centre in the inpatient neuromuscular rehabilitation unit. He also has an outpatient Stroke and Brain Injury clinic at GF Strong.

He has a private office in New Westminster, BC where he does a general physiatry clinic. He does consulting work at several hospitals in the Fraser Health Region (RCH, ERH, RMH, and ARH). He does a spasticity clinic at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Have an approach to finding the cause(s) of weakness
  2. Know a few physical examination maneuvres that can help with diagnosing cause of weakness
  3. Know common investigations that can help find the cause of weakness
  4. Understand general prognosis for changes in function based on cause of weakness and other comorbidities
